Mr. Stephen K. Rivero has been the Director of Bands at Flanagan High School since August of 2006. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Rivero was the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at Hialeah High School from 1996 to 2006. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Miami in 1995, and was named the Honor Graduate for the School of Music.
Mr. Rivero has been a member of the 13th Army Band for the past twenty-three years where he serves as Associate Conductor. He has performed with many artists such as Jose Luis Rodriguez, "El Puma," Bob Mintzer, Duffy Jackson, Slide Hampton, and J.J. Johnson. He was featured as a Guest Soloist with the FIU Wind Ensemble at the 2007 CBDNA in Michigan. He has been a member of several professional organizations throughout his career, including the Florida Bandmasters Association, Florida Music Educators Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, and the Music Educators National Conference.
Under his direction, the Falcon Sound earned Grand Champion at the 2006 Bronco Stampede, numerous First Place Trophies, Straight Superiors at the Florida Bandmasters Association District Marching Evaluation, and have beeen featured in the Walt Disney World "Dreams Can Come True" Parade in 2006 and 2007. Both the Flanagan Concert Jazz Band and Wind Orchestra have earned Straight Superior Ratings at both District and State for the past two years. The Flanagan Wind Orchestra also received the prestigious Otto J. Kraushaar award for the past two years and for the third time in the history of Flanagan High.
During his tenure at Hialeah High, Mr. Rivero was honored to receive the 2002 "Teacher of the Year." The Marching Band, Concert Jazz Band, and Wind Orchestra received Straight Superior Ratings at all Florida Bandmasters Association District Evaluations. In 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2006, the Wind Orchestra earned the Otto J. Kraushaar Award. In 2006, the Wind Orchestra traveled to Washington D.C. to compete in the Dixie Classic National Adjudicator’s Invitational and were crowned National Champion.
Mr. Rivero is married to his beautiful wife, Marlen, has six children, and resides in Pembroke Pines.

Dean Broadbent Associate Director of Bands & Director of Color Guards
Mr. Broadbent is a graduate of Western Connecticut State University. Prior to coming to Flanagan in 2001, Mr. Broadbent taught music at Samuel Staples Elementary School in Easton, Connecticut. He marched from 1990-1992 in the Connecticut Hurricanes senior drum and bugle corps and with the 1993-1996 Cadets of Bergen County. Mr. Broadbent has teaching experience with the 1997 Boston Crusaders, and with the Cadets from 1998 to 2002 (including a year as the Color guard caption head in 2001) and returned to the Boston Crusaders from 2004-2006.. Other color guard teaching experiences include Danbury HS, Connecticut from 1994 to 1998, Norwalk HS, Connecticut from 1998 to 2001, the 2001 St. Anns World bronze medallist, and the 2002 Braddock Independent color guards. Mr. Broadbent has been the Director of Color Guards at Flanagan High School since 2001. Since then, Flanagan has received the Scholastic Open Bronze medal in 2003, State Color Guard Champions in 2004 & 2006 as well as WGI Scholastic World Class Finalist since 2004. In 2008 Flanagan was named the WGI Scholastic World Champions. Mr. Broadbent currently serves on the South Florida Winter Guard Association Board, WGI Advisory Board and WGI Board of Directors.

Ed Maina Associate Director of Bands & Orchestra Director
Mr. Maina is very active as a woodwind soloist and clinician as well as an
educator. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Music and Jazz Studies and a Master of Music Degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and is excited to begin his second year as Associate Director of Bands, as well as the Orchestra Director here at Flanagan High School.
Prior to teaching at Flanagan, Mr. Maina was the Director of Bands at Lawton
Chiles Middle School for seven years and thirteen years at Westview
Middle School, both in Miami-Dade County. While there, he earned the coveted "Louis Armstrong Fellowship Award", awarded by the International Association of Jazz Educators for excellence in Jazz Education (1992).
To date, his bands have earned twenty-three Florida Bandmasters Association "Superior" Awards. Last year was the first year in Flanagan's history that the Symphonic Winds (Falcon Sound's second concert band) earned the right to perform at the F.B.A. State Evaluation by recieving a Superior rating at the district level!
While fulfilling his duties as an educator, Mr. Maina travels several times a
year performing concerts and conducting clinics. He also was one the coordinators of the
Superintendent's Honors Jazz Band (Miami-Dade County), and has also been the guest conductor and soloist for both Broward and Miami-Dade County's Honor bands. He was also a selection adjudicator for F.B.A., Middle School All-State bands for two years and was a board member of the Dade County Music Educators Association. Some of his performing and recording credits include Linda Eder, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Jon Secada, Chaka Khan, Pebo Bryson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Charytin (Univision), Ednita Rosario, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Bob James, Chubby and Duffy Jackson, Jaco Pastorius, Louie Bellison, Oscar Peterson, Mel Torme and The Maynard Ferguson Orchestra.
Mr. Maina still performs, records, private teaches and resides in Pembroke
Pines, Florida. He is happily married ( 25 years, now ) and is very proud his two children Justin
(22), and Priscilla
(20) who is an accomplished flute player with the United States Marine Corps Band (Okinawa). Both of my children are Flanagan HS and All State
Band Alumni. Priscilla will als be featured on her dad's upcoming CD/album..."In the Company of
Brothers". As well as a proud, member of the Flanagan H.S. family, he is obviously a
proud dad!
