Mr. Stephen K. Rivero is the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at Flanagan High School, in Pembroke Pines, Florida. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Miami in 1995 and was named the honor graduate for the school of music. He began his teaching career at Ft. Lauderdale High School in 1995. Upon completion of his first year teaching, he was offered a position at Hialeah High School. During his ten years at Hialeah, he achieved great success with all of his ensembles to include being named Teacher of the Year in 2002.In addition to his civilian profession, Mr. Rivero serves our country as the Commander and Conductor of the Florida National Guard’s, 13th Army Band. Chief Warrant Officer Rivero has been a member of the Army Band for the past twenty-eight years and has performed throughout the United States, South America, Morocco, and the Caribbean Islands. He attended Basic Training in Ft. McClellan, Alabama, and Warrant Officer Candidate School in Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Chief Rivero also serves as a representative for the Senior Army National Guard Bands Advisory Council where he travels across the United States providing technical assistance visits to Army Bands and Commanders. Chief Rivero has received numerous honors and awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Florida Commendation Medal.
Under his Direction, the Flanagan Bands have consistently earned superior ratings at all Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessments. In 2008, the Falcon Sound Marching Band was featured in the Emmy nominated-ABC Christmas Day Parade, Live from Walt Disney World. The Marching Band has been a finalist in the 2008, 2011, and 2012 Bands of America Regional Contests. In 2009, the Flanagan Wind Orchestra toured Washington D.C. and performed at the Lincoln Memorial and at the National Adjudicator’s Invitational, where they earned the title of National Champion. In 2011, the Wind Orchestra was the featured Band at the Opening Concert for the Florida Music Educators Clinic and Conference in Tampa, Florida. In 2012, the Wind Orchestra competed at the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Grand National Adjudicators Invitational is the most prestigious Concert Band and Orchestra Festival presented in America today. The Flanagan Wind Orchestra was awarded the highest honor of National Champion. Most recently in 2013, the Wind Orchestra performed in Concert with world renowned Composer, David Maslanka, where they featured his Symphony No. 8.
Mr. Rivero is an active Guest Conductor, Clinician, and Adjudicator. In January of 2010, he had the honor of being the Conductor of the All-State High School Honor Band. In 2011 he was awarded the National Band Association, Citation of Excellence, and in 2012 he was awarded the Oliver Hobbs Award, in recognition of consistent superior band performances and commitment and service to the field of music education. Most recently, Mr. Rivero was the Conductor of the inaugural “Nine Star” Honor Band at the 2013 FBA Summer Convention.
Mr. Maina is very active as a woodwind soloist and clinician as well as an educator. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Music and Jazz Studies and a Master of Music Degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and the Associate Director of Bands, as well as the Orchestra Director here at Flanagan High School. Prior to teaching at Flanagan, Mr. Maina was the Director of Bands at Lawton Chiles Middle School for seven years and thirteen years at Westview Middle School, both in Miami-Dade County. While there, he earned the coveted “Louis Armstrong Fellowship Award”, awarded by the International Association of Jazz Educators for excellence in Jazz Education (1992).
While fulfilling his duties as an educator, Mr. Maina travels several times a year performing concerts and conducting jazz clinics. He also was one the coordinators of the Superintendent’s Honors Jazz Band (Miami-Dade County), and has also been the guest conductor and soloist for Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade County’s Honor bands. He was also a selection adjudicator for F.B.A., Middle School All-State bands for two years. Some of his performing and recording credits include Linda Eder, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Jon Secada, Chaka Khan, Pebo Bryson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Charytin (Univision), The O’Jays, Ednita Rosario, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Bob James, Chubby and Duffy Jackson, Jaco Pastorius, Louie Bellison, Oscar Peterson, Mel Torme and The Maynard Ferguson Orchestra.
Mr. Maina still performs, records, private teaches and resides in Pembroke Pines, Florida. He is happily married ( 30 years, now ) and is very proud his two children Justin (28), and Priscilla (25) who is an accomplished flute player formerly with the United States Marine Corps Band (Okinawa). Both of my children are Flanagan HS and All State Band Alumni. Priscilla will als be featured on her dad’s upcoming CD/album…”In the Company of Brothers”.
