History
The Flanagan Winter Guards have had a solid and continuous foundation from there beginning and have become one of the premier performing groups in not only the SFWGA (South Florida Winter Guard Association), but nationally as an elite member of WGI (Winter Guard International)
Flanagan Winter Guards were founded in 1996,the same year as the school. |

After a successful first marching band season, the instruction of Tim Lee helped to bring the guard to the indoor performance arena. For the first several years of its existence, the Winter Guard competed exclusively in the South Florida Winter Guard Association Circuit, initially in the Novice class.
Within two years, the group was promoted to “A” class, thanks to the continued efforts of Tim Lee, and Nikki Drake, a tech at the time, and a former captain of the Cooper City High School Color Guard. During its third year, the guard branched out into competition on the regional level, making appearances at the Winter Guard International Regional’s in both Miami and Tampa, Florida. Each performance brought a new level of success and recognition. By the 1998 season, the program had expanded to two units, competing in the “A” and Novice classes. Throughout the next few years, the guard continued to grow under the instruction of Daniel Helton, Bradley Watkins, Ricky Garcia, and Amy Hernandez. In 2001, Dean Broadbent and Emma Roberts moved to Pembroke Pines and started teaching the Flanagan Color Guards. In 2002, the “A” Guard and Open Guard both moved up to the next highest level of competition. The Novice Guard moved to “B” class where they stayed until 2004, at which time, they were promoted to “A” class. The top guard moved to Scholastic Open class winning the SFWGA championship two years in a row as well as receiving the Bronze Medal at the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.
In 2004 Flanagan was promoted to the Scholastic World Class based on previous success and placed 8th at the World Championships in San Diego, California. The Flanagan World Guard has been a World Class Finalist ever since its induction as a Scholastic World Class color guard and was voted a “fans-favorite” among WGI fans for their 2005 production of “This is my moment” and 2006 emotional interpretation of the Oscar award winning movie “CRASH”
In 2008, the World Guard captured the Gold Medal with their unforgettable performance of “Post Secret,” beginning a new era of Champions. The Flanagan World Guard is the current 10 time SFWGA Champion and the 2009 & 2011 Scholastic World Bronze Medalist
This list of achievements established Flanagan as one of the power houses of the activity and continued to show the importance of a solid foundation and great training program.
The guard is continuing to grow, adding more shows to the calendar every year, placing higher at competitions, and gaining international recognition. |
